Known as La Grotta and La Cassette, these freestanding, two-bedroom havens are designed for total comfort and independence. Inside, you can gather around a cozy living room fireplace or whip up meals in a fully stocked kitchen. Outside, you will find a refreshing pool (because we all know how the Texas heat can be), patio equipped with a grill and firepit for starlit evenings. While La Grotta sleeps six and offers glimpses of Cypress Creek through the trees, La Cassette spoils guests with large picture windows and a private outdoor hot tub.  Both cottages are perfect for family getaways.  To fully immerse yourself in the cottage experience, keep in mind that Messina Inn requires a 2-night minimum stay for all Thursday–Sunday bookings.

Whether you are looking for rest and relaxation or action and adventure, Wimberley has something that checks all the boxes.  If you are looking to unplug and enjoy the Texas Hill Country, Messina Inn’s thirteen-acre property is perfect for exploring.  Walk along the creek and look for birds while enjoying the shade of the Cypress Trees.  Take a hike and see if you can spot some of the local wildlife.  You can sit by the creek and enjoy some adult conversation while the kids skip rocks and play cornhole.  After lunch in your fully stocked kitchen, pack your pool bag and head out to the pool to cool off and hopefully tire out the kids.  Return to the room and enjoy an afternoon nap.  Don’t worry, if your children are not nappers, they can enjoy some quiet time reading a book snuggled up on the couch or watching a movie in the spacious living room.

Blue Hole Regional Park

If your family is the adventurous type, have no fear, there is plenty to do just minutes away from the property.  For the family that loves the water, be sure to visit Blue Hole Regional Park.  It is a beautiful 126-acre park featuring a famous spring-fed swimming hole surrounded by ancient cypress trees. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, and a scenic riverbank perfect for family gatherings. Visitors can enjoy swimming, volleyball courts, and nature observation year-round. 

Jacob’s Well

Another popular choice is Jacob’s Well, an artesian spring that feeds Cypress Creek and serves as a popular spot for swimming, diving, and nature walks. It’s one of the largest underwater caves in Texas and a wonder for geology enthusiasts. Reservations are required to swim, and the surrounding trails offer a glimpse of the region’s natural beauty. 

Purgatory Creek Natural Area

If your family is more of a nature enthusiast type, a visit to Purgatory Creek Natural Area is a must.  Purgatory Creek is a vast natural preserve with diverse hiking and mountain biking trails, ranging from easy to challenging terrain. The park is perfect for birdwatchers, hikers, and anyone who loves exploring dense forest canopies and scenic creeks. A peaceful spot to escape into nature, just a short drive from Wimberley.  

Wimberley zipline Adventures

If adventure is in your blood, then head on out to Wimberley Zipline Adventures.  They offer an exhilarating experience with 10 zip lines ranging from 150 to 900 feet long, soaring over canyons and creeks. Participants enjoy breathtaking views of the Texas Hill Country from the treetops. Perfect for adventure seekers, the tour also includes a scenic hike and plenty of photo opportunities.

Another fan favorite is Chills on the Creek, a casual, family-friendly restaurant nestled along Cypress Creek in Wimberley. Evenings at Messina Inn: Fireflies, S’mores and Family Time

Once the day ends and you have returned to Messina Inn, the fun doesn’t have to stop.  Grab the ingredients for s’mores and head outside for some family bonding time.  While you build the fire in the fire pit, the children can look for fireflies under the starry night sky.  Once the fire is ready, roast your marshmallows and enjoy an ooey-gooey s’more while passing the flashlight and telling spooky stories.  You can cap off the night with board games in the living room.  If your family is anything like mine, then teams are a necessity.  Bragging rights belong to the winners until the next family game night!   After you tuck the kids into bed and turn off the lights, you can stealthily sneak out onto the veranda and enjoy an evening glass of wine under the stars.
